What is SMSC?

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

Exploring beliefs and experience; respecting all faiths and those who have none, the feelings and values that we hold; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity in our lives; promoting reflection in all that we do.

Recognise right and wrong; respect the law; understand consequences of breaking the law; investigate moral and ethical issues; offer reasoned and balanced views on issues.

Use a range of social skills; participate in the local community; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict; engage with the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, liberty, respect and tolerance.

Appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain's parliamentary system; participate in culture opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

How do we promote SMSC development in our students?

Our SMSC Grid maker will map where our students experience these influences in our school, in addition to this we have other SMSC activities in our curriculum that further promote fundamental British values:

Bradford Forster Academy has four Christian Values, which are also the names of our four houses:

These are integral in our support of spiritual, moral, social and cultural themes and the five British Values of: democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs as well.
